Mary: I've been a potter/clay artist since the early seventies. I started out as a functional potter working on the wheel. Currently I've been hand building exclusively. My work has tended more toward sculptural forms though with a functional memory.
Henry: I started making pots in '68, under the tutelage of Al Johnsen, Santa Cruz, CA. Recently Mary and I have attended area workshops at Penland School of Crafts and at Odyssey Center for Ceramics Arts.
Aside from Santa Cruz, Mary and I have had studios in Albuquerqe, New Mexico, and Charlottesville, VA. Currently we have a studio in the Asheville, NC, area.
My work is mostly functional--bowls, teapots, dinnerware, pitchers, the precious coffee cup, etc. Add lamps and vases. I believe in the co-dependence between art and life, each nurturing the other, as a source for work and inspiration and ultimately as a basis for living. Art, in any form, is not just a tag added to the real concerns of life. Is it?
Mary does all the brushwork on our pieces, thrown or handbuilt, bringing them to life in this final stage.
